The Old Congregational Church and the Union Guard Armory belong to the people of Copperopolis and have been taken care of by the Copperopolis Community Center since 1939. Anyone living in Copperopolis can belong to the Community Center. There is a Board of Directors whose purpose is to raise money to maintain and preserve these two buildings for future generations. Meetings are open to the public and are held in the Armory every first Thursday of each month at 6:00 pm.
Money is raised through various ways, including:
- Membership and individual monetary donations
- Annual 1st Taste of the Year wine tasting event
- Veterans Day Pancake Breakfast
- Rents paid by private clubs and individuals for the space
- Grant funding from private foundations
People can rent the Armory for private events by reserving it in advance and and paying a nominal usage fee. The Armory Rental Contract is available on the “Forms” tab.
Residents who love these two old buildings have donated many hours of volunteer work over the past 62 years. These volunteers consist of individual people like Charlie and Rhoda Stone, who are now deceased, and the many present and past individuals who served as Directors and members of the Copperopolis Community Center. Local businesses, associations and clubs support the Community Center.
Why have these people been so generous with their time and money? So that you and I could see these buildings today and remember our past and our cultural heritage–right here in Copperopolis!
